Lakeland, FL - A major Thanksgiving tradition in Lakeland continued this year as Volunteers in Service to the Elderly organized a large community effort to deliver holiday meals to older residents.
The program, which has expanded steadily over the past two decades, focuses on providing both food and personal interaction for seniors who may not otherwise have a holiday meal.
This year’s group of helpers included members of the Florida Southern College men’s basketball team.
Players assisted with packing meals and carrying boxes to waiting vehicles.
According to organizers, approximately 2,000 meals were prepared, packed, and delivered to seniors in the Lakeland area.
Many recipients are unable to travel or have limited access to family during the holiday season.
Volunteers reported that the interaction during deliveries is an important part of the program.
VISTE operates meal delivery programs throughout the year and continues to recruit volunteers for ongoing support of local seniors.
