You may have an alarm system at your house, but there are other things you can do before leaving for Thanksgiving to keep the would-be burglars away.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says trusted neighbors can be a valuable asset to you.

"Especially if you've got good neighbors and you're friendly with them, just tell them 'Hey, I'm not expecting anybody. If you see someone around the house please call the police right away.'"

He also suggests having the post office temporarily halt your mail delivery, if you'll be gone a significant amount of time. That way your mailbox doesn't overflow, which would be a key giveaway that your home is vacant.

You could also set your indoor and outdoor lights on a timer, so it always appears that someone is home.
