The United States was eliminated from the World Cup, suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in the round of 16 on Saturday (December 3).

Memphis Depay scored ten minutes into the game to give the Netherlands a 1-0 lead. One minute into stoppage time before the end of the first half, Daley Blind scored a dagger for the Netherlands, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Haji Wright got the United States within one with a goal in the 76th minute, but the Netherlands answered back when Denzel Dumfries put one in the back of the net in the 81st minute.

"A game like that, it comes down to the margins obviously," U.S. captain Tyler Adams said. "And when you play a team with so much quality like that, and you give them three, four chances, they're going to put three or four away."

Despite the loss, Adams said he was proud of the young U.S. team's progress.

"And for us, I'm super proud of the boys' performance today," Adams said. "We can show that we can hang with the best teams in the world, some of the best players in the world."

"And that's a lot of progress for U.S. Soccer. We're moving in the right direction for sure, but we need to keep pushing 'cause we're not there yet, but we're close," he added. "It's exciting. The more time together, the more growth we should have. But having said that, we still need to develop individually to more mature players for moments like this so we can come out on top."
