Colin Cowherd on Why Shedeur Sanders Dropped to 5th Round in NFL Draft

The 2025 NFL Draft was supposed to be about teams bolstering their rosters with fresh talent, filling key gaps in hopes of making a Super Bowl run. However, the giant elephant in the room quickly became Shedeur Sanders’ dramatic fall down the draft board. Once projected as an early first-round pick, Sanders shockingly slid all the way to the fifth round — and that was after several quarterbacks had already been taken. To make matters even more surprising, it was the Cleveland Browns who eventually selected him, despite having had multiple earlier opportunities. Now, as the dust settles, Colin Cowherd paints a picture of how this stunning fall happened — and what role both Deion and Shedeur Sanders may have played in it.

Why did he drop? Am I surprised? Shocked actually. I would've taken him if I was the Steelers, but between his dad Deion, who has many friends in the media saying during the Super Bowl on multiple interviews, "We will dictate terms, we will not play for certain teams." And then between Shedeur sandbagging interviews, that probably explains it. I talked to two different times, an executive in the league asking where he'll go. This executive said to me, "If he doesn't go in the first 6 to 8 picks at the top of the second round, then people view him as a backup, but I'm not sure how many teams want that circus in the building as a backup."
