A bill to reduce Florida's sales tax by almost a penny unanimously passed through the House Ways & Means committee Wednesday.
The proposal would cut the state's sales tax rate from 6% to 5.25% and would also reduce the tax rate on business rent, non-residential electricity and new mobile homes by .75%.
"Florida is the only state that levies a sales tax on commercial leases which puts businesses at a competitive disadvantage," according to Chad Kunde with the Florida Chamber of Commerce.
Bill sponsor Rep. Wyman Duggan says this reduction in sales tax would provide "immediate relief to every Floridian that makes a purchase, and it should save taxpayers more than $5 billion a year."
Governor DeSantis is in favor of saving Floridians billions, but he prefers reducing the state property tax rather than the sales tax.
Either way, the state budget would have to be adjusted accordingly.
