The storm brought devastating storm surge flooding and maximum sustained winds of 150 mph.

The Category 4 hurricane became one of a few of that strength to reach Florida, tying 2004's Hurricane Charley and 1919's Florida Keys Hurricane as the fourth strongest hurricane to make landfall in Florida.

The National Hurricane Center says three other storms had wind speeds that reached higher than Hurricane Ian's 150 mph winds:

  1. 1935 Labor Day hurricane - 185 mph, September 3rd, 1935
  2. Hurricane Andrew - 165 mph, August 24th, 1992
  3. Hurricane Michael - 160 mph, October 10th, 2018
